Batters keen to make amends: Dhoni

Kolkata: It wasn’t the perfect start for us against defending champions Deccan Chargers who were on top of their game. But the good thing is, it is still early days and there’s a long way to go. I had earlier said that one of the big challenges for us will be for our pace bowlers to perform to their potential. However, they would have known that they still have to lift their game and polish the rough edges. They also have to make good use of bowling the yorkers.
Adam Gilchrist once again produced the customary fireworks to provide an electric start to Deccan Chargers’ innings. After his exit, Herschelle Gibbs and Andrew Symonds brought all their experience into play pacing their innings to a nicety. They took their time to settle down by rotating the strike. Once they had a feel of the pitch and the bowling, they started playing the big shots.
I
was happy to see both my spinners Muttiah Muralitharan and R Ashwin bowl well under pressure. In fact, we could have reduced them to something around 175, but Sudeep Tyagi got some stick in the final over and they ended up scoring an extra 15 runs.
When chasing a total like 190, it is important to get a good start. However, our top order probably had a rush of blood. They played too many shots too early and paid the price. Since this was our first game, may be the batters were a bit too excited. In hindsight you can say that our top order batsmen could have taken a bit more time to settle down before playing their shots.
I am sure my bowlers and my batsmen will be keen to make amends today against the Kolkata Knight Riders who are riding high on confidence having won their first two matches. However, my team is equally determined to bounce back with a good alround performance.
Playing at the Eden Gardens has its own charm, and although, the packed stadium would be rooting for ‘Dada’s’ team, we will have our task cut out. In the team discussions we have figured out where we went wrong and where we need to get our act right. A good showing will help us get back to the winning ways and also make a start on the points table.
