Fans and sponsors have played a key role in the growth and popularity of Chennai Super Kings, and K George John, a Director of Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited, which runs the much-decorated Indian Premier League franchise, hailed their contribution while announcing Tekplay Systems as technology partner for the upcoming season.
“Fans and social media play an important role in the tournament. They are the reason why CSK is one of the most admired teams in the IPL,” John told reporters. “We are also in talks with a paint company, a mobile services company, an industrial company and a bank as potential sponsors. It’s a new beginning for us, but I must say that the support from sponsors and fans have been overwhelming,” added John.
Tekplay is building CSK 2.0 digital platform and an app that will serve as a one-stop destination for all fan related activities, including ticketing and merchandising.
CSK won back-to-back IPL titles, entered the final on four other occasions and the last-four in all eight seasons that they featured in. Not to forget two Champions League crowns and a high win percentage of 60.68. The side’s enviable home record includes an unbeaten run in 2011 when they turned Chidambaram Stadium into a fortress.
One of the key reasons attributed to CSK’s success in the first eight seasons was that the team managed to retain a core group of players and the support staff.
“For us loyalty is very important,” John said. “That’s been our strength over the years,” he added. “Obviously we would like to have Mahendra Singh Dhoni and our core players back with us. The IPL Governing Council is yet to announce the player retention policy going forward, and so we will have to wait until then. MS (Dhoni) is synonymous with CSK and we will go all out to get him,” John explained.
In the past Stephen Fleming was head coach and CSK is hopeful of retaining all their previous support staff.
