“This is a great platform for these kids who are the future of the state,” said former India batsman Hemang Badani, who was chief guest at the prize distribution function of The Muthoot Group-sponsored 4th Junior Super Kings Inter-school T20 Championships 2017 at the ICL Sankar Nagar cricket ground in Tirunelveli on Friday.
Don Bosco (Egmore) beat AVM Rajeswari for the crown in a repeat of the Chennai leg final.
“This is a tournament that brings together schools from across the state in the final phase. The very fact that these kids get to play under lights, on a turf pitch and use Kookaburra white ball is an experience in itself. In my time, at 16 we got to play of turf only at state-level age-group cricket,” he added.
Also present at the prize distribution ceremony were former India batsman VB Chandrasekhar, S Shanmugham, Joint President (Manufacturing), The India Cements Limited, George Muthoot Jacob, Executive Director, The Muthoot Group, Shankar V Subramaniam, Business Head, The Hindu Tamil, KS Viswanathan, Consultant – Sports, The India Cements Limited, and Mr S Dakshinamoorthy, General Manager, The India Cements Limited.
“T20 cricket requires a lot of fitness and athleticism. It the earlier days, school kids played multiple sport and developed athleticism. T20 has increased the importance of athleticism in cricket,” said Chandrasekhar.
The winners of the first phase held in seven districts (Madurai and Tirunelveli combined) and the winners and runners-up of the Chennai leg took part in the second and final phase.
